Matthew Hance (b. Washington, DC.) is a multidisciplinary artist, whose work navigates the landscapes of alchemy, memory, and universal archetypes in human nature. Working primarily in oil on canvas, and drawing in graphite with a concentration on both abstraction and figuration.

The act of creation is how the human spirit metabolizes experience. It connects us to what is real and reminds us of our humanity. One of the things I value most, in producing a work of art, is to create a sensation of discovery within an individual's aesthetic experience. A mixture of transparency and concealment. Revelation is a process, more tide than wave. What develops overall is a greater emotional resonance and visual impact that the person experiences which I feel is very important. Other key aspects in my work deal with the fragility, vulnerability, and resilience of the human condition. For the last 15 years, my daily art practice is aimed at exploring these ideas and it is also my path to higher reasoning. I have dreamt of embodying the life of an artist since I was 8 years old. As long as I can remember, I've had this unwavering determination to be creative and have had a deep understanding that my self expression is how I can best communicate who I am and how to relate to the outside world. Over the years, I've steadily built upon this dream and have dedicated my life to this purpose.
